Making sure that your photos emerge the best in a pet photography contest is a daunting task. However, with the right preparations, you should be able to dramatically increase the chances of the judges regarding your pics as the best among those presented.
The good news is that we have been in similar contests before and we have emerged victors.
This blog is all about sharing our experience so that anyone in need of the right information about winning such contests can use it and become really good at shooting pet photographs.
Follow the tips below to prepare for a pet photography contest.
Get a really good camera
There is no better way to win photography contests than to get good cameras. A good camera will do all the heavy lifting for you. You will just need a good technique and your photos should be great.
If you already have a good camera, well and good. But if you do not have a good camera, get one early enough so that you have enough time to familiarize and become comfortable with it.
Practice, practice, practice
Do you think just about any person can walk into a professional football match and perform great if they have not been training/ practicing?
The case is the same for all other professions. Whether one has the talent or not, there is a need for plenty of training and practice to get ready for a shoot.
This is especially true for shooting animals since they usually move around a lot and you cannot just tell them to sit still or smile or change their pose.
So practice a lot with your pet or the pets at your local animal shelter. If you have enough time, enroll for a pet photography crash course, or become an apprentice for a pet photographer for one or two shoots and you should be near ready.
Get an assistant
You cannot really have a good pet photo shoot without really having an assistant around. Pet photography assistants are usually very good with animals.
Their job is to keep the pet entertained while you set up the shoot, to get doing certain poses for different shots, and to generally help around the set.
Without an assistant, it will be very difficult for you to do a good photo shoot.
Make sure the pet is comfortable
An uncomfortable pet is difficult to shoot. Moreover, photos of pets look uncomfortable don’t really win many competitions.
So always try to familiarize with a pet before a shoot if you do not own it. Also, even when the pet is comfortable, you should think of interesting situations including the pet jumping or chasing something to get a pet looking even more photogenic for your camera.
Tweak the surroundings and do some light editing
When taking the shots, always be ready to move furniture around, to open or close curtains, to move your lighting equipment and basically to do just about anything to tweak the surroundings for better shots.
In addition to tweaking your surroundings, you should be prepared to do some light editing on your work if it is allowed for the contest. Sometimes, a slight change, in contrast, is all you need to transform your photo into a powerful image.
If you’ve have never done any editing before check Creative Cloud Photography by Adobe. It is a very good photo editing software.
